Spike Island (Ireland)
In the last 1300 years Spike Island has been host to a 6th century Monastery and a 24 acre Fortress that became the largest convict depot in the world in Victorian times! The island's rich history has included monks and monasteries, rioters and redcoats, captains and convicts and sinners and saints. But since 2013 it's also hosting SEA-Tech Research and Development station (Bastion 5). Students from all over the world have come to train with our technicians. In 2014 the Island of Spike was connected for the first time to the mainland using wireless microwave technology. A Vantage Pro2 Plus is broadcasting weather forcast on the SeaFi Horizon network used by Port of Cork.
